You can also get Dupont 225S aluminum prep at your local automotive paint store. It is phosphoric acid and is used at the first step of alodining. You can also get the alodine for a complete job, but the acid etch by itself will do a lot for you.
Wear a respirator if you use Alodine. It contains hexavalent chromium and is not something you want to be breathing.
