Mark,
 I would use a bushing where I wanted to attach the cable to an arm or
lever.  Thimbles are better for connection via a shackle to an arm or
tab.  I think any cable ought to be thimble/shackle wherever it is
possible a side load might be put on the joint. Such as rudder pedals
and rudder horns.  I see even some "production " airplanes using pretty
swaged forks, which can be damaged or bent and restraightened.  A
typical homebuilders over emphasis on "looks" uses a turnbuckle to the
rudder pedal, which is poor from a damage potential viewpoint, and
excessive expense.
