Wooden spars which have sat around for years, which have been protected from
moisture by storage in a dry environment and especially have been spar
varnished and show no signs of dry rot are as good as the day they were made.
An acquaintance built a Jodel D-11 which has a wooden box spar. It was hangered
"Outside". He then built another plane of his own design. The old Jodel sat in
his back yard. He did not use it but did not want to sell it because he felt
that the spars would by now be rotten and he would not want to be responsible
for someone's death. He took out his chain saw and cut off the right wing just
outboard of the fuselage. The spar was in absolutely perfect condition. At
least he had some parts for sale.
