I was surprised that they were called flimsy -
particularly after the web was added - this should
become a (relatively) sturdy structure.  Alook at the
WAF's gives some indication of the load that they were
designed to bear.

I was more surprised at the coment that they were
there for fore /aft support - they are even weaker in
this direction.

I think they are perfectly adequate for the portion of
the load (vertical) delegated to their location (.75c)
if they are built to plane with the correct materials
and adhesive.

The rotational (torsional) forces are in the shear
capacity of the skin - very important to consider when
adding /changing flap or aileron sizes or proportions
that differ from the design and impose different
"twisting" forces to the wing.
