You may want to check into some of the rule changes that came about with the sport pilot certification. I believe that some of the rules that apply to being the mechanic or A&P for an experimental or sport type aircraft have changed. I was at an EAA meeting recently where they discussed the changes and I think that you can go to some fairly brief training and become the primary mechanic on an aircraft that you have purchased as long as the aircraft is "sport" eligible.
