Chris,
Unfortunately, this is a pretty common clause in life insurance policies. If
you're on board doing your work as a mechanic you would not be part of the
flight crew, so you *should* be covered. If not, then your estate would have
an action against your employere, but that's another topic. It would be a good
question to ask the underwriter to answer in writing, then attach the statement
to your policy.
My life insurance through work will cover me if I'm killed in one of my planes,
but my Accidental Death and Dismemberment (AD&D) insurance through work will
not. Again, it's not an unusual clause.

I guess as private pilots was should all look into our policies closely. It
would be a shame if something was to happen and our families were left with
nothing.
