True auto carbs will suck the choke plate open and default to no choke if they 
are not tampered with to do otherwise, so I don't know what the issue is 
concerning choke malfunction.  If the linkage to the choke breaks, the choke 
just doesn't work, because the auto maunfacturers make it so more of the plate 
is inboard of the pivot point than outboard.  Manual linkage allows you to 
control how much while cold.  By using a filtered air bleed, a simple air valve 
installed into the intake before it splits into the 4 individual runners will 
allow for leaning the mixture.  Installing something similar to a drain cock 
from a radiator will allow gradual air bleeding or leaning of the mixture at 
pilots control.  Most good auto carbs have internal mixture adjustment that 
don't require input from the pilot due to internal diaphrams and needles that 
adjust mixture according to the vacuum signal, in essence the airflow.  In 
short a good auto carb don't need to be messed with.  Run it as is!
