Yes, I was going to screw or rivet that connection, but I'm convinced that
the epoxy will do just fine, so I left it that way.

I'm too lazy to drag out all my old books and try to remember the fairly
simple method for determining the spar cap dimensions, but I would think you
couldn't go wrong by using the same 2" thickness that the plans call for,
tapering smoothly (starting just outside the fuselage) to something like
3/8" at the tips.  Of course if you move the WAFs out, you have to make sure
you have enough material for them, which might explain why the plans show
the spar caps on the center spar are the same height all the way to the
WAFs.  You might even need a different kind of WAF, but the good news would
be that the further out they are, the less load they have to carry.  ANC-18
(Design of Wood Aircraft Structures) would probably help, and I'm sure there
are other good sources of WAF design data.
