Gavin, I can see your not being able to the to the nut inside the canopy frame, but why can you not get to the nut that is under the longeron. I believe that I have some T nuts as small as #6 and if you mail me off NET, with your address, I will be glad to send you some. And I would have a problem with drilling 1/4" holes in the top of the longeron where it is the weakest as there is no supporting structure over that area.
