Not quite right. As it is usual in law: "It depends!!" Copyrights enacted before January 1, 1976 are protected for 28 years, and need to be renewed in the 28th year. Copyrights after that date survive for 70 years after the death of the person who created the design.
The matter is, as usual, a little more complex, since several changes to the copyright laws have been made in the last 30 years.
