Netters
Here is an offlist post that summarizes my feelings very well, and also
identifies how I want to supplement the Gathering not replace it. I intend to
go this year where ever it is and when, but support Orma on the date change.
Here is the post, any/all feedback welcome:
I'm in England now, but was in San Antonio, TX, until
last Summer. A couple of years ago some of us in TX
started talking about a regional get-together we
called "KRs Over Texas". Larry Howell in NE Texas
organized a weekend at a nice little airport (one of
those places where all the houses have hangers) near
Canton, TX, in May (I think it was 2000) and we had a
great turn-out and a lot of fun.
It did not replace the Gathering, and we got to meet a
lot of people who quietly monitor the KRnet and a lot
who just heard about it and showed up.
The big advantage you have is the warm Winter weather.
So many KR builders would love to have a break in the
middle of their miserable winter to get together with
a few other KR builders in warm weather for a weekend.
I think Sun-N-Fun may be a little too big for them,
and it comes just a hair too late in the Spring. You
might consider something in November or February.
At Canton I met and became very close friends with
Larry and with Bob Stone, who was a friend of Ken Rand
when Ken built his first KR-1. I also got to meet a
lot of other guys who built great KRs and got to go
over and see Les Palmer's plane and spend a day
hanging out with him. What started out almost as a
joke on KRnet ended up with me meeting a lot of great
KR people and making some life-long friends. And a
great weekend as well.
Best wishes for your get-together.
