Peter, The reason why rotary engines are out of business almost worldwide is because they pollute much more than conventional engines, and therefore, they could no longer meet the very stringent pollution regulations of the 1990's. Mazda was the only manufacturer giving it a try, and they decided that since it would not pass the tests in most Western countries, they could no longer reach an economical production scale.
