What I can tell you (from my personal experience) is that you should use a regular straight weight motor oil during the breakin period. After the engine is well broken in then switch to Mobil 1. I have noticed a significant decrease in Oil Temps when using Mobil 1. I also noticed that the engine seemed "freer" and reved faster. Can I quantify it with actual numbers, No, but as a race driver, I could notice a difference. A Formula Vee engine is a very finicky little animal, and required constant attention. Because that little engine was so high revving, and didn't make a whole bunch of power, ANY increase to power output or rev capability was easily noticed. After using Mobil 1, I noticed that I didn't have to re-hone or replace rings as frequently. If you attempt to breakin the engine with a Synthetic oil, the synthetic oil lubricates so well that it will prevent the rings from seating properly. I won't venture into the detergent / Non-Detergent arguement about breakin periods, other than saying that I use Detergent oil for breakin. The thery being that the detergent "suspends" any foreign matter that could have been left during the re-build process. I also cut apart all of my oil filters as I want to know what the filter has trapped. Your results may vary. --- Jim Faughn <jfau...@socket.net> wrote: > I use Valvoline (sp?) Durablend.
