Howdy, Netters; The question about the Sporty's handheld may have already been answered, in which case I apologize- but for those studying the market, here's an excellent and detailed comparison site: http://www.avshop.com/transceiverroundup.html
The Sporty's unit did not fare well. And while I'm an AOPA member and really like Sporty's service (and buy from them regularly), there's no sense in buying a product when there is something better available for the same money. And FWIW- my own handheld is the rock-bottom cheapest there is... the Icom unit with no numeric keypad (it's tuned using the arrow keys). It's slow; it's clumsy; but for local fun flying- it works and it's cheap. My own handheld GPS is an old Magellan GPS 2000... it's simple and cheap and it is light-years ahead of what a VOR and ADF, even DME, could do in the best of IFR panels not that many years ago!
