I have a King KX-99 handheld and I have communicated with a plane in the
pattern at an airport 20 miles from me and I was standing on my back porch.
I have installed an antenna in the vertical stabilizer and also have a 10
watt amplifier which will increase the power of the handheld from 3 watt
output to 10 watt output. With the KX-99 connected to the plane's antenna, I
have received planes reporting forty + miles away. Not too shabby for a $75
radio. The KX-99 is no longer manufactured by King but if you can get your
hands on one, you will have a great handheld. Yes, it has VOR. eBay is a
great place to find these.
