Brian and others,
I have had the same radio for 2 years now, and have no complaints with it
except that when using the headset adapter, mine will not cancel the microphone
on the handheld in favor of the headset mic. This causes a loud feedback to the
listener. So I just leave out the mic jack, and use the built in mic. The range
leaves alittle bit to be desired on the ground, but mine transmits and receives
well up to about 10-12 miles from the tower, if I am over 1500' AGL. Too many
ground obstructions below that to get good range. That is also using the small
whip antenna, not hooking it into the plane antenna, which the directions state
will increase its range. Using the button that allows for last frequency select
allows for acceptable navigation on VOR or localizer tracking. Since it is not
the most sensitive thing, I would plan to use it as primary navigation, but it
makes for a great backup, or emergency radio. I had an electrical failure one
time and had it on board and was able to communicate with the tower all the
way, as well as follow the VOR approach in, by using the last frequency button,
and continually switching back and forth. Have not seen or heard of a handheld
that does nav/com at the same time, same display.
