I use an HVLP that I got from Harbor Freight. $99. The unit is like a vaccuum cleaner in reverse.

I think I have the same HVLP gun that you bought - the "professional" model with the one quart cup. I've shot a lot of primer-surfacer with it - it works just fine, but it uses a LOT of air.
