I use an HVLP that I got from Harbor Freight.  $99.  The unit is like a
vaccuum cleaner in reverse.

This is a pretty good website also. I think I have the same HVLP gun that
you bought - the "professional" model with the one quart cup. I've shot a
lot of primer-surfacer with it - it works just fine, but it uses a LOT of
air. My compressor ran constantly trying to keep up with the gun. Keep us
posted on how this thing works for your topcoat.
