Brian,
>From my experience in using Platinum Plugs in a VW is
don't use them. I tried using them in my Formula Vee.
The (SCCA) rules stated that we could only use a
point style ignition (Bosche 009) with a Blue coil.
Which would equate output-wise to a magneto. I tried
all different heat ranges, and played with the gaps.
The bottom line was with the Platinum Plugs, I'd end
up with a top end missfire, and the plugs just were
not suited for extreme duty. Bear in mind the
application that I was in. 1200cc's, 7800 rpm, WOT
90% of the race, in fact you rarely lift the throttle,
and the engine is "singing" along at 7800 rpm more
often than any other rpm. What did I end up using?
Regular cold heat range Bosche Plugs, side gaped and
indexed to each cylinder. Plug gap was .035.
The side gapping "unshrouded" the center electrode and
with the plug indexed slighly towards the exhaust
valve, I never had a plug overheat, foul or high speed
missfire. What I noticed with the Platinum Plugs was
that they didn't have enough surface area for the
spark to jump across. The actual spark was smaller
when compred to a regular Bosche Plug. This is what I
believe was the problem with using them in that
environment.
