Brian,
Unless there is a legitimate reason to run other than normal spark plugs, Ross
is right; platinum plugs do not increase the fire but rather just last longer.
BUT, be careful on how you handle the plugs as the platinum tips are easily
damaged, ie knocked off, especially if you are trying to gap them. Bosch
platinum plugs come pre-gapped to approximately .044, which is a good gap for
most late model engines. If your engine is running between say 8 to 1, 9 to 1
compression then this is a good gap. Higher than that, and you need a smaller
gap to compensate for the denser air mixture, or it will be too hard for the
spark during constant loads due to the leaner mixture reducing the ease of
firing compared to rich mixture given the same compression ratio. Just watch
the heat range and if given a choice, select a heat range one step lower rather
than higher. That will give added help in preventing detonation.
