There really is no option here. The answer is "not". My first KR had a retract. After it collapsed 3 times, enough was enough. I converted it to a "Grove" type fixed and never had another problem with it. If that gear collapses on you even once, it will cost you more than the conversion.
The plane that I am partnered in now, had a retract on it when I started. However, part of our partnership agreement, was that the first thing, was to put on a fixed gear. We have done that and used the Diehl type. Having done both, I can assure you that even though the Grove is more expensive, you will appreciate it's simplicity of application. I really like the Diehl gear now that it is on, but you can never inspect the point of attachment. With the Grove, it is visible to you at all times. No question. Get rid of the retract.
