There were several simple, light, and effective ideas mentioned for gauging 
fuel quantity in the wing tanks, but not the equally simple and light one 
that Mike Mims offered.  It's at

It uses pieces of clear rod, different lengths, to indicate fuel quantity.  
My coffee maker at home uses this same method to show amount of water in the 
reservoir.  PS- don't use this method if you plan to fly at night ;o)
