"He said he stopped marketing these because they didn't sell well do
to the weight and cost."

Which one are you talking about? According to the Great Plains
website, the flywheel drive is the lightest one and the cheapest one.
It does have some oddities, however. There's a secondary ignition run
off a special oil pump rather than the distributor housing, and
several other components are different because the engine is turned
around from the normal VW.

According to the website, this engine was first used in the bk1.3
single-seater. That design has the cylinders out in the breeze, but
the cowling is fairly narrow in front. Here's a 2014 Experimenter
article with a closeup of the engine
http://experimenter.epubxp.com/i/287214-april-2014/11 The cowling
has a huge gap on the underside for cooling, but otherwise it seems
fairly tight, and it looks like a KR cowling could be fitted around
that engine. The flywheel doesn't look like as much of a problem as
the starter (which seems to be sticking way up there).

Another possible problem is using a magneto. A year or two ago, I
noticed they didn't list a magneto as an accessory, and emailed Steve
about it. He confirmed they don't have a way to use one. Of course,
that doesn't mean you can't use one, but that you'd have to design
your own way to connect it (which is basically what Ken Rand did in
the KR plans).
