hi all, I was searching the KR messages database (HUGE advantage to have that
resource) for stall speeds and flight test speeds etc. I also found in the
archive pages somewhere, a nice excel spreadsheet of about 2 dozen kr's with
specs, stall, top, engine, configuration, prop, etc.
richard shirley's clean KR was the top performer. of course it has tapered
wings and a lot of power in both entries, a Jabiru 3300 and a 2180, 235mph and
215mph respectively.
>From a quick look at pictures of this plane I can assess that it is the top of
>the performance envelope for this design, and it doesnt even have KR wings.
>troy petteway's KR2 with modified C-85 at 125hp delivers 230mph on presumably
>stock wings(?)
the next one down is mark langford at 192mph, and then its the "normal" 140ish
to 175ish top speeds.
Is Rich Shirley and his KR still around I wonder? (I saw a post from 2008 where
is was thought to have sold it), and troy still flying his?
I wonder what fast KR's will be at the gathering which I might be attending.
as to my strategy, I plan to build a mostly "stock" KR1. no need to worry about
any exotic changes of any kind. In fact depending on 3rd class medical reform,
I may just build to meet LSA specifications. We'll have to see.
as an aside, I have learned about pitch instability and particularly from jeff
Scott's tail experiences and flight test reports. It looks like a slightly
enlarged horizontal stabilizer and even vert stab / rudder for that matter
would not be a bad mod to do when building, and doesnt seem too radical at all
to add a few inches there.
