Steve was using 10mm long-reach Champion G59C plugs for the secondary
ignition when I got my plane from him. I've done a lot of research on
plugs - both for the secondary system and for the mag - back when I was
going through the engine and systems completely - and decided to stick
with the G59C plugs because they are a bit on the cold side and are
non-resistor plugs. Adding resistor plugs to resistor leads, perhaps
with resistor spark plug caps, is way over-burdening the coils. To
prevent RF interference one should use resistor leads or resistor plugs,
but not both. Or you can do it and reduce the efficiency and life of the
coils.

I've recently revisted this subject while researching new leads for my
Dyna coils that came with my engine from Steve Bennett. My current leads
that came with the plane are red 8mm Taylor leads that look and test fine
but I'm going to put new leads on anyway once I decide which ones I want.
I wrote Great Plains about availability of theirs and to see what they
are selling, also to order a new mag puck. So far no response but it was
only a couple days ago that I wrote. I miss being able to call Linda or
Steve. They always answered the phone.

I think my coils are getting a little weak with time so putting some new
leads ought to help. The miss I've been experiencing with the secondary
system on the right rear cylinder was corrected by reducing the gap on
the plug - which means my coils are getting weak, or the leads are arcing
since they also have some years on them. I'm reading the insulation
breaks down over time . . . but that doesn't seem to happen with car
leads or my bike leads and they get a lot more use . . . so I don't know.
Putting some new 10 mm Taylor leads on can't hurt. Waiting to hear what
GP is selling for their secondary systems these days.

I've been reading some performance forums lately (motorcycle primarily)
and apparently NGK and especially Bosch are considered to be junk by the
guys whose lives revolve around these subjects. They seen to generally
love ND - Nissan Denso, which is what I chose for my magneto plugs a long
time ago based on research I did then. W27ES-V fine wire plugs. Took a
bit of looking to find them. They've been great and so have the Champion
G59C plugs on the secondary. The miss on the one cylinder lately is not
the fault of the plug.
