Bob,

If you don't have a data plate on the engine, the only way to determine the
size will be to start taking the engine apart. The pistons will typically have
a stamp on them on the top that can be read with the cylinder head removed.
That will give you their diameter size, 90/92/94,etc in mm. If the engine has
been run, you'll need to clean them up to find it. Harder to tell the throw on
the rods. You'll need to take the engine apart further. I would highly
recommend you buy several books on this before you do it, I bought all my
references through either Great Planes or Revmaster. There is also a ton of VW
engine videos on youtube that are pretty good but don't help on the aviation
mods that are typically done.

I was able to tear down my Revmaster VW 2100D and rebuild it in approx 20
hours. Not bad for my 1st time. I had a case crack that required it. My crank,
rods, and pistons were all fine and did not need to be replaced. I did replace
the CAM to increase performance. The cylinder heads are really the only thing
that requires constant attention (valve adjustments) and most likely
replacement, I am on my second set of heads at 630 hours. My dual Bendix
Magneto was also serviced/repaired once. Overall my engine reliably has been
pretty solid.

There is an accessory case on the "back" of the engine that can have a mag and a
starter motor. Search the Great Plains for the part. Actually they are a great
source for everything VW.

questions

If I purchased a VW engine that is currently on a plane and
appears to have been flown in the past, how can I tell what size it is and can I
add electric start to it being that it is currently hand prop
Total rebuild
without question but just wondering about those two things
