With 500+ hours I could not tell you what my actual touch down speed is. The last time I look at the ASI on approach is when I cross the numbers. I slow in steps from whatever I'm flying on down wind (120 -140) to 110mph ready to turn final, bring in speed brake, slow to 90 on final, to 80 on short final till I flare. With my speed brake full down, if I cross the numbers less then 80, I don't have much reserve energy left to find the runway gracefully. Recent video indicates my actual touch down speed to be in the low 60's. You should be savvy enough to know what your airplane is telling you without looking at a gauge. In Dan's case, I'm guessing as he got his approaches slower and slower his KR kept saying "I'm gonna bite your A^&, I'm gonna bite your A*&.". It's a bit like determining the difference between what your wife is "saying" and what she "really means". In the case of your KR, don't go with other people's speeds. How accurate is their ASI? How accurate is your ASI? Different EW, different wings, different CG's, etc. On your first flight you'll want to do a bit of slow flight approach to a stall, no need to go full stall, and see where your KR feels comfortable. Our speeds will probably all be very similar but verify yours before marking the gauge. FYI: My typical GW at touchdown is 1050 to 1100 pounds, my RAF48 wing is only 20'8" , my speed brake is 9"X30" (with holes :-) ) and deployed to 90 degrees. I have two great videos I hope my daughter can put on youtube in the very near future. I'll keep you posted........... Larry Flesner
