It is a mystery. Mine had no holes and performed very well. No holes is easier to implement, so, for me it seemed to be the most logical choice. I use an electric servo that I got from Steve Glover. It has an automatic stop at both ends of the throw. I started out with a momentary switch so I could put it down a little at a time. However, found that full throw was always what I needed, so changed it out for simplicity. Switch down, board down, switch up, board up.
Manual activation may be better, but it takes up precious room in the cockpit, so I never considered that option.
