You're not the only one to draw that conclusion. A builder who won best auto engine award pondered why those who fly in to support the "FLY IN" have to also pay for the privilege. I only attended Sun n Fun once due to distance but noticed extreme commercialism with daily attendance fees, food, booth fees, etc. I heard Airventure was even worse ..... making me wonder where does all these excess millions $$ go?
