I have not attended any of the workshops so I can't comment on how useful they
are, but I'll put in a good word for the KRNet because that was how I got my
first lesson on fiberglassing and it looked so easy and so clear that I had the
confidence to just jump right in and get busy. I was going to be in the L.A.
area on business some years ago and I put out the word on this list. KRNetter
Mike Mims was kind enough to meet with me and take me to his hangar, where he
not only showed me his KR that was under construction, but he also showed me
many parts and assemblies that he had in progress and then he asked if I had
ever done any fiberglassing. Other than a long-forgotten repair job on the
bottom of a wooden boat, I had not. He then proceeded to scissor out a piece
of glass, grab a handy piece of foam, and then mix up a little cup of epoxy as
he talked me through what he was doing.
He mixed up some micro, filled the foam surface, wet out the little piece of
glass on a piece of visqueen plastic, laid the wetted-out glass onto the
micro'd foam, squeegeed out the excess resin, peeled off the visqueen, smoothed
the layup, and then said it would be dry in a couple of hours. Easy as pie.
He did not take it to the next step and put down some peel-ply, but I figured
that out later (also thanks to this list). All of this was prior to YouTube.
Thanks to this list and to the people who offer hands-on instruction and 24/7
responses to questions that I have had over probably 15+ years on this list.
