Larry I have used this foam for many years with only minor mishap.... Both blue and pink. I believe that many others have also used it. Didn't the original Rutan canard craft use it? Do you have any technical data that might through some more light on the subject? Never thought of running it thru my thickness planer. On the other hand, I do have and use the hot wire tools where ever possible. I also use the tan urethane foams sold at the local lumber yard. It is sold with foil backing on it. I simply remove the foil. I can not hot wire this stuff but it sands easily. I can actually replace the nichrome wire on my hot wire tools with a long broken bandsaw blade and have up to an 8' coping saw if needed... to reduce sanding time and dust. This urethane does require a bit more resin and slurry mix which makes the parts a bit heavier.I like to EXPERIMENT....and never say never or/and it cannot be done. I have built 2 aircraft that called for fabric covering and on the control surfaces I experimented with foam and glass instead of the fabric. See at http://www.flickr.com/photos/100112644 at N03/ Can you imagine this method being weaker than the fabric? Only marginally heavier...but never so heavy as some of the ballast many of us use on the final W & B. Pat

Maybe I'm behind times but new to me. I thought I would pass it on in case any of you have the same need some day. , but I would NEVER use this type of foam in an airplane, it is non structural and the fiberglass, carbon, Kevlar cloths when applied WILL DELAMINATE EASILY FROM IT. One more thing about this foam. Some of it has a thin plastic sheet coating that peels right off. Be sure to remove this before attempting to glue or fiberglass onto it. I wish this foam was good for building planes because it is so readily available but it is not, please don't use this stuff for your airplane.
