Your description sounds like the problem is that Kopete is trying to use the
obsolete SSL version 1 protocol and Google's servers refuse using it (because
it's insecure). Normally it should be negotiating the SSL version and use at
least SSL version 2 (the newer TLS standard is preferred if the server supports
it, but you'll get away with SSLv2).
