I do too, with some caveats.

Can you clarify this somewhat?


My additional thoughts (Caveats):

 From a UI perspective, it might be extremely surprising to a user who 
did not realize this would happen, if there isn't a notice about it. 
Though, I suspect many would be pleasantly surprised.

Adium does (or at least did, I can't seem to trigger it lately), 
something nice: When you set two contacts to have the same display name, 
it asks if you'd like to merge the contact. I think there should be a 
similar interface in Kopete, if XMPP goes this direction (or Kopete does 
separately).

An exclusion mechanism might be nice, so that you explicitly set some 
contacts to be non-merged.

If I ever get some time back (been working too hard lately),
I might poke at this idea.
