I did try making animated emoticons out of the rendered formulae at one point,
but I don't think it worked, and I didn't understand why. Recently I have tried
again, but I cannot test it as the other person is using a more recent version
of the official client, for which sending custom emoticons depends on a fix for
bug 129929.

I think these are the Ink messages. It seems like this has already been tried,
but the official client ignores the messages. I assume this is because they are
normal GIFs instead of Ink-format GIFs, and the official client expects to
interpret the Ink instructions and does not use the GIF fallback, but I may be
completely wrong on this.
I don't know if any of the Kopete developers are working on this or have a
solution. If not I would be happy to try again with animated GIFs or any other
workarounds when bug 129929 is fixed, and post a patch if there is still
interest in this. Thanks!
