I get this (or a bug with similar symptoms) on Kopete 0.12.3 (under KDE 3.5.5).
It seems to happen when focussing a tab that causes more toolbars to be shown
than the previously selected tab. For example, on my setup, chats with Jabber
contacts will have the formatting toolbar shown, whilst chats with MSN contacts
will not. So, under these circumstances (if not, set your client up that way
first), steps to reproduce are:
1. Start a chat with a Jabber contact.
2. Start a chat with an MSN contact.
3. Fill Jabber chat (or both chats, if you're in a chatty mood! :P) with enough
messages to make the chats scroll.
4. Click on the MSN contact's chat tab.
5. Click back to the Jabber contact's chat tab.
If I had to guess what is happening, I'd think that maybe the conversation
text box is being scrolled to the bottom BEFORE the rich text toolbar is shown,
hence when it is shown, the box is re-sized to make room and is no longer
looking at the very end of the conversation. However, I've never actually seen
the source OR used Qt myself, so I don't know if this is plausible; just an
idea.
