Not sure if this is possible for kopete, but in Gajim there is only a one line
text-field below the chat. However, if one writes more than one line it
automatically expands to two lines etc. until a maximum of 10 lines or
something in that range.
This is nice because it does not waste any space but at the same time allows to
see the whole text if it is longer than one line.
