A short follow-up.
The update was from 24.05.03 to 24.11.01.
I hadn't upgraded to 24.11.00 first - but that is no longer available in
the repository.
For now, I have rolled back everything. Next time I'll upgrade on a copy
of the VM :-)

I can find nothing relevant in the log files.
I've rebooted the server, restarted the service etc etc.
I'm stymied.
