If you are using Ubuntu 16.04 you can configure your MySQL to be less strict or use MariaDB. Instructions can be found on the wiki:

https://wiki.koha-community.org/wiki/Koha_on_ubuntu_-_packages#Ubuntu_16.04_and_MySQL_5.7

Hope this helps,

Katrin

Greetings,

The newer versions of Koha are not supported on Ubuntu 12.04. Use a newer
version Ubuntu, though Debian is the primary recommended OS.

Ubuntu 12.04LTS is getting "older" but is still [at least partially] supported until 2019. My experience is that Ubuntu 16.04LTS needs "downgrading" of MySQL (to 5.6 from 5.7) for Koha. The Wiki reference you cite is not very clear on all this.

Given the statistics for usage of Ubuntu servers (anecdotally "quite prevalent", no proof) I would suggest that it behooves our Koha community to be clearer on what exactly is involved -- it's not "rocket science", but it obviously could be a "good thing (tm)" to have a write-up available on the reasons why, and what is involved.

I get the impression, perhaps incorrectly, that the difficulties described in this query involve a 32-bit system. If this is not possible, shouldn't we say from which version forward 32-bit packages are no longer suitable for Koha installation?
