That is awesome.  Didn't know about that.  Works like a charm.  Now I just need 
to figure out the equivalent of

HAVING items.holdingbranch=<<Branch filled at|branches>>

within Access and all will be well.  Thanks for the info!

If you're using Access as an ODBC front-end to the MySQL database, it should be 
possible to define an "SQL pass-through query" [1] that would let you use the 
MySQL version of the query directly,
ExtractValue() and all.
