The short answer is that you can run Zebra on whatever server you want, including the web server, the database server, or even a separate Zebra server. Zebra can communicate with Koha over a Unix-domain socket, in which case the zebrasrv daemon will typically need to run the web server, or over TCP, allowing zebrasrv and the Zebra index files to be hosted on a different server. The koha-conf.xml configuration controls whether Zebra uses Unix-domain sockets, TCP, or both to listen to requests.
