With all the correct icu modules installed on Ubuntu, and the database tweaked properly for utf-8 encoding, our diacritics display properly in the bibliography information. The problem for us is in searching. When I use the modified default.idx and the icu.xml file and run rebuild_zebra.pl keyword searching does not work at all. Author and Title searches work fine.

Do you mean there are problems importing the data, displaying it, searching for it in the index, printing barcodes for items, saving titles to a list, emailing data, or something else? All these areas have been problematic for Unicode data at one time.
