In the end, I didn't write my own auth plugin. I could get Discourse to recognize it, but didn't seem to register it as an auth provider. I went with a third-party plugin which achieved the same goal though, so I was happy enough. Wasn't worth spending more time on it at the time.
We've just about finished our local setup. Just finished setting up the ability for people to create topics using email, and for replies to be submitted by email. Haven't really checked out how digests work yet. (One potential wrinkle is that Discourse doesn't like to send you email if you've logged into the web UI, so you may find your emails a bit inconsistent I think if you flip between email and the UI...) I think we're going to start UAT soon, and after we go live I'll have more info about user experience I think.
