I would be in favor of the detail display bein made with XSLT for items.
That would of course be much more flexible, and would allow us to have
custom fields easily (i.e. to display whatever ends up in
more_subfields_xml as we please).
I think there are historical reasons (the template based display needs
to work and took care of this with the table), and the fact that items
are not stored in the marcxml anylonger might be a reason too, althought
maybe something puts them back in the marcxml when doing the xslt
processing. (And you get them in the marcxml when saving the record,
even though the item level fields are not in biblioitems.marcxml.)

I know Fridolyn was planning on trimming the number of items added as 952s
to the Zebra records, so in that case the database would have the true
reflection of holdings while the MARCXML would only have a snapshot.
Overall, not sure.
