So... in Australia we actually have multiple different formats with 2 different
formats being used for personal numbers:

Mobile phones:
+61 412 345 678
or
0412 345 678

Fixed line:
+61 2 5555 5555 
or
02 5555 5555

This is very different to North America where all phone numbers follow +1 (555)
555-5555

For Australia, you'd want one format for "Mobile" and "SMS number" and you'd
want a different format for "Work phone" and "Phone" (although that can be
tricky because those numbers could be mobile or fixed line...)

Anyway, not a blocker. I'd say Australians just wouldn't use this
functionality, or might just limit it to Mobile and SMS number. 

I do think though that it reflects a problem with the design. System
preferences probably aren't the right place for it.
