I really like the KiCad principle of loosely coupled schematic library part and footprint, much more flexible than the way other EDA-tools handle the task. MSEkicadBOM looks up the component and footprint in a database based on value-fields in the schematic and defined footprint selection parameters and produces a *.cmp file which can be backported into the schematic. It would be very bad news if it is not possible anymore.
