I am reopening this because: 1. My harddrive has already been cooked by this bug and I'll probably have to buy a new one. I set up an upstart script to run the hdparm command, but it seems to need it run more often than at just startup. Check it out:
193 Load_Cycle_Count 0x0012 090 090 000 Old_age Always - 107677 2. Its unreasonable to expect a typical user to run hdparm and set up this workaround. 3. Thinkpad is one of the few laptops on which Linux in general and Ubuntu specifically actually works. 4. It's driving away users, see above. The problem is that Load/Unload Cycle Count get higher every time I use my laptop on battery mode. With AC it seems fine, but with battery in a matter of a few minutes (1-2) my Load/Unload Cycle Count gets higer for 3 numbers. I checked it on Windows, and it was at 92117. Then I booted in Ubuntu and the number climed at 92121. I used laptop on AC for 20 minutes and then it was at 92122. Then I unpluged AC, and used my laptop on battery for few minutes and the number was at 92125. Then again on AC for 15 minutes and it was at 92125. So it gets high quickly on battery, very quickly. Also I hear scratching noise of HDD when Ubuntu opens Files, Firefox os something like that. On Windows I almost never hear that, only when doing something hard for HDD. This is happening on my 750GB Seagate disk. Running Ubuntu 14.04 LTS with Windows 7 dual boot.
