I should add that when the screen goes "blank" not only is it dark but the LCD backlight appears to be turned off.

There is nothing I can do but hit the power button to power off the machine. Upon powering back up everything is normal. Attempts to go to the console by hitting CTRL-ALT-F1 do nothing. The screen stays off.
