I bought a Dell G15 5530, with Ubuntu pre installed.
Dell provides a modified version of Ubuntu (kernel, drivers, firmware, tools
and default packages installed).
The default image has a kernel 6.1.
When updating using Dell repos, it install a modified kernel 6.8.
It also uninstalled the 6.1 as soon as the 6.8 is installed (which is odd to
me, usually, one keeps the previous kernel as well).
However, even with their patch kernel and custom nvidia drivers, the issue
occurs with kernel 6.8.
With nouveau driver, no issue.
Some reports that fresh install of Ubuntu 24.10 with kernel 6.11 and nvidia
drivers 560 works fine, but it does not work for me. I couldn't install kernel
6.5 (kernel build using mainline tool didn't load).

Issues are :
* freeze after 4 to 5 seconds (last timestamp in dmesg log files), this happens
most of the time. Using root console from recovery mode in grub allows to
disable nvidia drivers (purge nvdia-* with apt)
* random freeze after few minutes. More the graphic card is used, the fast the
freeze occurs
* nvidia driver not being loaded (according to lsmod)
* in on-demand mode, offloading to discrete card does not work (using the env
var explicitly to perform GPU tasks)
* in performance mode, no boot (freeze after 4-5 seconds) or freeze after few
minutes
* monitors works only at 60Hz if nvidia drivers are loaded

For the record, I contacted Dell. They have no plan on working on this
issue. This issue is not part of the warranty covering the G15 5530,
according to them (but I didn't check the license agreement).

Title:
Dell G15 5530 instability using Ubuntu Desktop 22.04.05 or 24.04 with
  6.8 kernel

Status in linux package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
I own a Dell G15 5530 laptop and have had a challenging experience using
Ubuntu Desktop.
First experience: Received the laptop in June with Windows 11. Downloaded
the version of 24.04 available at the time, and installed it - found it to be
very unstable
Second experience: I downloaded Ubuntu Desktop 22.04 (probably .3 or .4 with
the 6.0 or 6.5 kernel) and installed that instead, and it was much more stable.
The 22.04 distribution was also the version tested and certified by Dell and
Ubuntu, so I decided to go with that instead. Yay, problem solved - or so I
thought.
Third experience: I didn't use the laptop much over the summer, but came
back to it this week. Naturally, I used APT to upgrade the 22.04 software
components to the latest and greatest -- and the instability returned as the
the kernel was updated to 6.8. Typically browsing in Chrome, at some random
point one tab would freeze, then Chrome would freeze, then other elements of
the Gnome desktop would freeze, then the mouse and keyboard would freeze.
Since the laptop was still relatively new to me, I restored the Windows 11
with SupportAssist to determine whether there could be hardware issues and
experienced no freezes. For now, I've reconfigured dual-boot with Ubuntu
Desktop 22.04.4 with the 6.5.0-18-generic kernel and Nouveau, which seems
stable this morning so far. I'm concerned that updating the operating system
(kernel specifically) or installing a proprietary nVidia driver will
re-introduce instability.

This G15 5530 model includes an i5-13450HX processor, nVidia RTX 4050
  6GB, AX201 wireless, 16GB of RAM.

Wondering if any specific later versions of the kernel would resolve
this issue based on the experiences of others, or whether certain
versions of the graphics driver have been found to be more stable than
others with the 4050 card. I'm happy to provide more specific
hardware information or logs, and do take some troubleshooting
measures -- although my goal is to eventually have a stable system for
  work.

Please note others have reported this issue in Dell forums and tried
different things with variable success, but the most stable option
seems to be 6.5 kernel with Nouveau for now.
