I suspect I cancelled the upgrading process myself after waiting for and
missing the usual progress bar and terminal window showing what was
being installed and/or changed

Following this I had an issue with the Rhythmbox applet. I could not delete
playlists and entered data on soundtracks could not be saved. In the edit menu
several useful options to proceed were 'greyed out'.
The applet used the complete display and it was difficult to return to the
desktop. The stop-cross in the right upper corner of the window did not respond.

I suspect it was all caused by my inexperience with the program

However I succeeded in powering down my laptop in the usual way and
restarted the system uneventfully.

Please accept my apologies for not being able to be more specific; I am
just an interested user but certainly not a Linux specialist!

Ubuntu release: Ubuntu 20.04.2 LTS

I entered the command below in a terminal window but got as response
'unable to locate package pkgname'.

I found out that I have GNOME version 3.36.8 (if this is of any
assistance?)
