Public bug reported:

HW: Lenovo P70 laptop

With Ubuntu 22.04, I could shut the machine down just fine, either using
the cmdline shutdown command, or the XFCE GUI logout/shutdown option.

With Ubuntu 24.04, the system mostly shuts down, but not completely. The
display turns off. The LED in the laptop power button turns off. The
keyboard backlight stays on. The numlock LED button stays on. The mute
keyboard button even responds and turns the mute LED on and off. In this
state, if I turn off the power input to the laptop, the battery is
drained overnight.

I am fairly certain that if I choose the old kernel from Ubuntu 22.04 in
grub, the problem does not occur; I believe I tried that before.
However, I can no longer validate that since installing 24.04 updates
installed enough kernels to auto-uninstall the 22.04 kernel that was
previously hanging around from the upgrade process.
