After being prompted to update from 22.04 to 24.04, the upgrade went
smoothly...until it didn't. Now, I'm faced with the 'white screen of
death'. After figuring out how to get to GRUB v2.12, I tried every
recovery mode available; yet ended up with the same unenviable result
(unable to recover). The good news is that I'm able to get to the
command line for 22.04. I just don't know what commands to execute
(without making matters worse) to bring my system back. I did not backup
my data (I know, cardinal sin - please forgive me). However, I'd first
like to copy my data files to an external SSD I've mounted in the recent
past. Any advice or help regarding course of action is much appreciated.
By the way, after the upgrade failure I was advised to submit a bug
report...yet doing so has not gotten me closer to recovery; hence, I'm
converting this bug to a question (with the hope of both fixing the bug
AND getting my system back up and running).
